After the conflict of 1971, the need for self-reliance in the defence production sector became acutely apparent. In order to accelerate technological development and achieve self-reliance through indigenization, the “Defence Production Division” was established in 1972 with the mandate to develop policies and plans, coordinate production, procurement, and development activities, and accelerate technological advancement. In 2004, the Division was promoted to the status of a Ministry and given the name “Ministry of Defense Production” in recognition of its successes in production and export.
