There are currently more than 14,000 doctors, 2,000 nurses, and more than 12,000 paramedics working for the Sindh Department of Health throughout the province. Three medical colleges—one each in Sukkur, Nawabshah, and Larkana—two medical universities (Karachi and Jamshoro), 12 nursing schools, 10 midwifery schools, and five public health schools for female health visitors are all located in the province. The extensive system of hospitals and healthcare facilities consists of 6 teaching hospitals, 5 institutions with specialised care for mental, chest, and dermatological illnesses, 11 district headquarters hospitals, 27 major hospitals in major cities, 44 Taluka hospitals, 99 Rural Health Centers in small towns, 738 basic health units in Union Councils, and 305 dispensaries for traditional medicine in larger Union Councils.
